Valerie Hemingway has a remarkable history. In 1959, when she was 19 years old, she captured the attention of Ernest Hemingway, who hired her as his personal secretary. His obvious crush on her led to a number of strange adventures--including a trip to Paris where he showed her his old hangouts--but their relationship, while intimate, remained platonic. After Hemingway's suicide, Valerie helped his widow organize his voluminous papers--and a few years later, she became one of the four wives of Hemingway's son, Gregory, who had a sex-change operation and died in prison in 2001, arrested after wandering naked along a Florida highway.
